In 2003, I was employed as a Relationship Manager for Juniper Bank. Less than a year into my marriage, I was diagnosed with Lupus and was left feeling exhausted and discouraged. I was the mother of two small children and this seemed to interrupt my career ambitions. After careful considerations, my husband and I decided that I should resign and try staying at home with the children. Whoever thinks being a stay at home mother is a walk in the park is in for a huge awakening. I loved being home with the children, but I was definitely in need of some adult interaction. Mom’s clubs, stroller clubs, book clubs, parks, library and zoo trips filled my calendar.
In 2004, I decided to get into real estate to provide supplemental income for my household. As I pondered the decision, I recalled being in high school my senior year (1992) and forgetting to select two choices for my career day, so I was placed into the slots that were available. One of the available options just so happened to be a real estate agent. She spoke of having a very successful career that enabled her to meet people from all walks of life. She also mentioned that she did not have a college education but had managed to leverage the relationships she had built to help create a successful business and career. During this time period I was currently going to school in the evening but had not yet finished college, so our stories seemed to share a lot of similarities, so I also decided to give real estate a try. After many years in real estate, I realized that the seed to begin my career was planted long before it produced evidence in my life.
Now it has been over a decade and my career has blossomed into a family business. Not only does it provide for my household, but it provides for those whom we employ and the many others that we have shown how to leverage real estate to build wealth. Many long-lasting relationships have been started and sustained as we have been able to help so many others achieve their dream of homeownership. But, I must say that one of the most rewarding parts of my career has been the opportunity to be a visual of God’s grace and arms extended to help others. My career in real estate has enabled me to inspire other young ladies and mothers like myself to believe that untraditional financial independence and wealth can be created and leveraged using real estate. Real estate is just one of the many tools that are available to us as we set out to build long lasting legacies for generations to come!
